Perssonas, Inc.

Abstract

The Red Hat open source engine that runs Perssonas has a cluttered layout and is not intuitive for the user. My role was to design a new navigation and page layout that allowed a portion of the main screen real estate to be used for recommendations, as well as improve usability.

The layouts I designed are clean with increased visibility of the “Home”, “Networks”, “Groups”, and “Updates” tabs since they are part of the site’s main functionality. Reducing the noise of the user feeds was also a priority. I designed several concepts on more efficient methods of displaying the site’s content.

St. Joseph Paper + Packaging

Abstract

St. Joseph Paper + Packaging is a regional packaging and janitorial supply distributor. After being in business for twenty years, they had a marketing firm redesign their logo with a more modern image. They wanted to continue this modern feel on their website and contracted me to bring their site design and standards up to date. The artistic approach to the design sets them apart from their competitors and leaves customers with the impression that they are not another corporation where the customer is simply a number.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office

Abstract

The Prosecutor's office was looking for a major overhaul of their website as far as design, but they were also looking for functionality and low maintenance. I implemented an open source content management system, Joomla, that allows them to manage the site with the click of a mouse. No programming experience is required. This system also gives the user the option to edit the content of each page with a WYSIWYG editor that is similar to typing into Microsoft Word. I also created the site's custom skinned template.

Sneva MFG.

Abstract

Sneva MFG. is an Indianapolis, IN based ski and snowboard manufacture that requested a website to expand their sales market. The site did not require much content so I designed a larger navigation and header to take up more page real estate. The owners wanted a simple and creative way to display their products. Lightbox was a perfect solution since it was simple for them to update with new product photos.

Abstract

iCycle was a proof of concept project that implemented radio frequency identification (RFID) technology into the Indiana University Little 500 bicycle race. The project required creating a mySQL database and web interface that provided analyzed race data that was relayed in real time to enhance the race experience for the riders, coaches, and general public. icycle is now an annual Informatics Capstone project.

Academic

Abstract

While attending Indiana University I enrolled in several human computer interaction courses. These courses gave me the set of principles that guide my designs and inspire creative “outside of the box” thinking that is applied to every project in which I develop.

I was taught basic rules of design as well as when these rules can be challenged. Incorporating affordances into my design work increased their usability and provided an improved overall user experience. This allows me to create designs that direct users eyes to specific content. Below is a selection of projects I created pertaining to interaction design.

Abstract

After designing a website for an Indianapolis based ski and snowboard manufacturer, I was given the opportunity to design the graphics for a production model snowboard. The designs to the left are concepts. I am currently in the process of designing the graphics for my personal board.

Concepts

Abstract

My concept designs are not fully functioning projects, but rather exercises in exploring new design techniques. I experiment with different layouts and website navigation to expand my understanding of user interaction.

Can I describe myself as a solutioneer?

I don’t think that is a real word but I like the sound of it. I love a challenge and thrive on developing unique solutions. As a solid conceptual thinker, I have no problem picturing a project from start to finish and determining the requirements to achieve success.

Originally from Indiana, I made my way west to southern California where I could get sun, surf, and snow all in one day, but Indiana has a way of drawing you back. I'm currently obtaining my masters degree in Human Computer Interaction/design at Indiana University. You’ll usually find me in a T-shirt and jeans but every now and then I rock the neon orange Pumas. I believe that the best work is produced in a hardworking, fun and casual environment where creativity is a natural byproduct.
